What A Website Project Actually Looks Like From Start To Finish

Every project begins with a conversation. This is where I learn about the business, its goals, challenges, audience, and what success looks like. I want to understand not only what the business does, but where it's headed and what role the website needs to play in getting there. It's also an opportunity for us to determine whether we're a good fit to work together before any design work begins.

Once planning is complete, I begin building the first homepage draft. This serves as the foundation for the entire website and gives us something tangible to react to. At this stage, I'm focused on establishing the overall look, structure, and direction of the project rather than perfecting every detail. The goal is to make sure we're moving in the right direction before investing time into the rest of the website.

A website is only as strong as the content that fills it. During this stage, we focus on gathering photography, refining messaging, and making sure the content accurately reflects the business. This often involves reviewing existing materials, identifying gaps, and creating new content where needed. For many clients, this is the point where the website begins to feel real.

With the homepage approved, I begin expanding the rest of the website. Services, locations, galleries, resources, contact pages, and any additional content are developed during this phase. Each page is designed to support the larger story of the business while maintaining consistency across the entire website. This is usually where the project starts coming together quickly.

This is often the longest stage of the project. We review the website together, gather feedback, and make adjustments to both the content and design. Sometimes the changes are small, and other times they lead to bigger improvements that neither of us anticipated at the beginning. Most websites go through multiple rounds of refinement before they're ready for launch.

Once the design is approved, I shift my attention behind the scenes. This includes search engine optimization, mobile optimization, form setup, automations, analytics, integrations, and all of the technical details that visitors never see. While this stage isn't the most visible part of the project, it's one of the most important. A beautiful website still needs a strong foundation underneath it.

Before launch, we review the website together one final time. I answer questions, provide tutorials, and make sure everyone feels comfortable navigating the backend of the website. We also perform final checks to ensure everything is functioning as intended. By this stage, there shouldn't be any surprises.

After weeks of planning, designing, refining, and testing, we choose a launch date. The website goes live, systems are connected, and the business officially has a new online home. It's exciting, rewarding, and usually a little surreal to see everything come together. Launch day may be the most visible milestone, but it's really the result of everything that happened before it.
